Divorce Trauma Symptoms
Let’s take a moment to review the DSM-5 criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD.
Alterations in arousal and reactivity – like hypervigilance or more easily startled
Intrusion symptoms – nightmares or flashbacks
Avoiding the things that remind you of the trauma
Negative changes in thinking – like, “I’m a failure. I’m never going to be good enough.”
Negative changes in mood – like feeling isolated, or losing enjoyment in the things you used to do for pleasure. Difficulty feeling joy or peace.
These symptoms need to last at least one month following the 6 months after a trauma.
Now, let’s discuss Divorce.
Divorce is the severing of a relationship that wasn’t intended to end when it was started. Divorce is not a one day event. It can take months, even years to get everything through court. Divorce, even if necessary, is never easy. How can you reduce the risk that the symptoms above stick after the 6 months mark?
Get therapy as soon as you can. Part of what makes these symptoms persist is the brain’s inability to understand the events. Do you recall the metaphor, “My brain knows, but my heart doesn’t?” Counseling helps them both understand and comfort each other.
